ABOUT THE AUTHOR ANDREW COLLINS

Travel writer Andrew Collins spends most of his life on the road, driving back and forth across North America, logging about 40,000 miles annually. He’s visited more than 1,600 of the nation’s 3,145 counties, and has spent more than 2,000 nights residing in hotel rooms, slumming with friends, or crashing with various relatives—he is always most appreciative of his hosts’ kind generosity. In recent years, he’s lived in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and rural New Hampshire, and has spent extended periods in Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, as well as overseas in London and Amsterdam. While presently based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he still spends much of the year in New England.
Upon graduating from Connecticut's Wesleyan University in 1991, Andrew joined Fodor’s Travel Publications, where he edited or co-edited more than a dozen travel guides. Since leaving Fodor’s in 1993, he has contributed to more than 100 travel books as both writer and editor, authoring Moon Handbooks New Orleans, Moon Handbooks Connecticut, and Moon Handbooks Rhode Island. His travel column "Out of Town" appears in gay and lesbian newspapers throughout North America; his work has also appeared in numerous magazines, including Travel + Leisure and The Holland Herald.
On those rare occasions when he’s not on the road, Andrew can often be found browsing the goods at farmers markets and gourmet food stores, or putting them to use in his kitchen. He also enjoys a variety of outdoor activities, including jogging, kayaking, and golfing, and follows professional baseball with a disturbing degree of fanaticism. A confessed pop-culture junkie, he scans online newspapers and newswires every day in search of odd trivia and amusing gossip about has-been celebrities. After finishing one of his guidebooks, he’s been known to watch Nick at Nite or the Game Show Network for hours on end, until fading blissfully into trance-like stupor. Such is the life of the professional traveler.
