ABOUT THE AUTHOR ANDREW HEMPSTEAD
Kayaking through the Queen Charlotte Islands, chowing down on pancakes at the Elbow Room, hiking in Yoho National Park, and joining the mid-day crowd at Butchart GardensAndrew Hempstead has done all of this and more. He's out there not because it's part of compiling a guidebook, but because he enjoys everything British Columbia has to offer. These diverse experiences, coupled with a deep respect for nature and an interest in local history, have been essential in his creation of Moon British Columbia. Andrew spends as much time as possible out on the road, and rather than having an itinerary laid out for him by local tourism offices, he travels incognito and experiences the many and varied delights of British Columbia the same way his readers do.
Andrew has been writing since the late 1980s, when, after leaving a career in advertising, he took off for Alaska, linking up with veteran travel writer Deke Castleman to help research and update the fourth edition of Moon Alaska-Yukon. In the ensuing years he authored guidebooks to Alberta, Vancouver & Victoria, the Canadian Rockies, and Western Canada, as well as books to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. He has also co-authored books to Atlantic Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and contributed to guidebooks on the San Juan Islands, United States, and the Pacific Northwest. He has written for a wide variety of other media, including National Geographic Traveler, Expedia, Alaska Airlines, and Microsoft's Automap.
Andrew and his family live in Banff, Alberta. When not working on his books, Andrew spends as much time as possible enjoying the wonderful surroundings in which he liveshiking, fishing, golfing, camping, and skiing.
Andrew's website, www.westerncanadatravel.com, showcases his work and provides invaluable planning tips for travelers heading to Canada.
