ABOUT THE AUTHORS JOE CUMMINGS & NIKKI GOTH ITOI
A good portion of Joe Cummings's childhood was spent in San Antonio, Texas. A weekend family trip to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, brought him face to face with his first taco al carbón in the 1960s. Following the smell of fresh corn tortillas southward, he made his first solo trip to Mexico in 1973 and has been stuck on the Tortilla Trail ever since. Joe's affinity for Mexican border culture prompted him to take an epic road trip down Baja's Transpeninsular Highway in 1991 to research and write the first edition of Moon Baja, followed a few years later by Moon Cabo. Joe has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles in Mexico by Volkswagen, four-wheel-drive, and even by burro. He eventually built a house near the beach in Baja's Cape Region. In addition to writing Moon Handbooks to Baja, Cabo, Mexico, Mexico City (with Chris Humphrey), and Northern Mexico, Joe has penned numerous other guidebooks, phrasebooks, and atlases for countries around the world. As a restless freelance journalist, Joe also contributes to Ambassador, Bangkok Post, BBC Holidays, Car & Travel, The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday, The Los Angeles Times, The Nation, Outside Magazine, The San Francisco Chronicle, South China Morning Post, and The Wall Street Journal on occasion. He has twice received the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Gold Award, and twice been a finalist in London's Thomas Cook Guidebook of the Year awards. In 2001, the government of Mexico awarded the Pluma de Plata (Silver Quill) to Joe for outstanding foreign journalism on Mexico.
The living coral reef at Cabo Pulmo drew Nikki Goth Itoi and her husband, Paul, to Baja for the first time in 2000. In 2002, they both quit business jobs to drive Mexico’s Baja and mainland coasts for several months. Seven thousand miles and countless tacos later, they remembered the people, cuisine, and tropical-desert scenery of Baja best of alland they have returned as often as possible ever since. Nikki Goth Itoi has experience writing for print, radio, and online media. Her work has been published in the San Francisco Chronicle, Red Herring, IndustryWeek, Business 2.0, Hemispheres, and other publications. She is the author of Moon Hudson River Valley and a contributing editor to Gemütlichkeit: The Travel Letter for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the New Europe. A native of New York State, Nikki has traveled throughout Mexico, Europe, Asia, and the United States for work and fun. When not on the road, Nikki enjoys outdoor activities in the San Francisco Bay Area, including bay swims, bike rides, and backcountry skiing. She and Paul live in San Francisco with their son, Emmett. Other travel guides authored by Joe Cummings: Moon Cabo Moon Hudson River Valley |
