ABOUT THE AUTHORS MARK MORRIS & ANDREW HEMPSTEAD
Mark Morris first became involved in travel publishing while working as an editor at Moon Publications, when the original Handbooks series was produced in two crowded rooms of the publisher’s Northern California office. Mark made the transition from editor to travel writer with his first book, Odyssey Illustrated Guide to Ireland. He continued to explore his passion for seabound lands by writing the first edition of Moon Atlantic Canada and guides to the Oregon coast.
Mark has always found something profoundly alluring about coastal places, and for him Atlantic Canada distills the essence of that feeling. His personal connections with the region date back to the early 19th century, when ancestors from Britain, Ireland, and France came to North America via the Maritimes.
Besides the great beauty of the land and sea, Mark is drawn to Atlantic Canada‘s rich cultural heritage the legacy of the Irish, French, Scottish, English, and others who settled the provinces and have managed to resist (or have been overlooked by) modern homogenization just a little.
Mark lives with his family on a small island in Puget Sound, where he can indulge his interests in wooden boats, organic farming, and fiddle tunes.

On his first trip to Atlantic Canada, Andrew Hempstead made a beeline for the coast to photograph the legendary Nova Scotia sunrise. He then headed to the nearest local restaurant, and wearily ordered the daily breakfast special without bothering to check what it was: cod fried in pork fat, pickled beets, and a side of baked beans.
With this traditional (and unexpected) introduction to Canada’s east coast, Andrew set off on a road trip that stretched the term “unlimited mileage” on his rental car to the limit. Teaming up with knowledgeable local Ted Vautour for part of the trip, Andrew traveled to the farthest corners of all four provinces.
Andrew has been writing since the late 1980s, when, after leaving a career in advertising, he took off for Alaska, linking up with veteran travel writer Deke Castleman to help research and update the fourth edition of the Moon Handbook to Alaska and the Yukon. In addition to this book, he has authored guidebooks to the Maritimes, Newfoundland and Labrador, Alberta, British Columbia, the Canadian Rockies, Vancouver and Victoria, and Western Canada, as well as contributing to guidebooks on the San Juan Islands and the Pacific Northwest. He has also worked on multiple guidebooks to New Zealand and Australia.
Andrew lives with his wife Dianne, daughter Brio, and two dogs in Banff, Alberta. When not working on his books, Andrew spends as much time as possible enjoying the wonderful surroundings in which he lives, hiking, fishing, golfing, camping, and skiing.
