ABOUT THE AUTHOR TOM DIRLIS
In 1999, an old friend was kind enough to invite Tom Dirlis to Prague-a city he'd dreamed of visiting since his days at university when he inadvertently stumbled upon the eye-opening works of Czech writers Bohumil Hrabal and Milan Kundera. It was the dead of winter when he arrived, and the city's melancholic streets and mysterious beauty left an immediate and indelible impression. Three days later, he returned home, quit his job on the spot, and headed back to Bohemia for what was supposed to be a six-month stay. Nine years later, Tom still makes his home in Prague and continues to travel extensively throughout Central and Eastern Europe, stopping as often as he can in burgeoning Budapest, a city whose echoes of imperialism and lust for life continue to captivate him. He has managed to pay the bills over the years working for numerous companies and publications as copywriter, editor, and journalist. He continues to hope that he will one day be able to give something back to the cities that have already given him more than he could have ever imagined. |
