ABOUT THE AUTHOR ALEXEI J. COHEN
Born in New York City, Alexei J. Cohen fell in love with Italy after seeing Federico Fellini’s film La Strada. By the end of the film he was ready to follow in Anthony Quinn’s footsteps. After graduating from Carnegie-Mellon University with degrees in creative writing and history, he decided to explore la dolce vita (the sweet life) in Italy. He hitchhiked through Tuscany, slept in hostels, and expanded his cheese and wine palate considerably. Although his lire eventually ran out, he was hooked on the Italian way of life. Years later in downtown Manhattan, he met an Italian woman who rekindled his interest in mozzarella, Brunelleschi, and leaning towers. They got married after several years of courtship, and a culture that once seemed exotic to Alexei began to make sense. Italy became a regular holiday destination for them, and eventually the couple made the transatlantic leap. After living several years in North London, they decided to settle under the umbrella pines of Rome. Before leaving Brooklyn, Alexei made frequent contributions to TimeOut New York and while living in London he was the launch editor of Fine Wine magazine. In Rome, he returned to the print world and worked as an editor for a small publisher specializing in art, culture, and cinema. Since then he has translated, edited, and written several books, including Sophie Loren’s Recipes and Memories, The Films of Federico Fellini, and The Little Book of Knots. He is currently ensconced in fatherhood, teaching English to Italians, and contemplating what to write next. |
