About the Author

Katie Githens

Travel writer Katie Githens already had her nose to the ground, so to speak, exploring the best of Virginia when she started her research for Moon Virginia. Her first book, The Dog Lover’s Companion to Washington DC (which includes northern Virginia in its coverage), was still hot off the presses when she set off to explore the Old Dominion in its entirety.

From her backyard in Arlington to the back roads of Appalachia, Katie learned a few things along the way: namely, that bluegrass is soul music; that she would have aced American history if she grew up here; and that knowing how to drive on winding country roads in winter is a very, very useful skill to have.

While doing the footwork for Moon Virginia, Katie kept one eye peeled for outdoor adventure. She loves nothing more than a good, long trail run, except maybe a farmers market to stop at for breakfast when she’s done. Blissfully, Virginia is a rich destination for both activities.

Before moving to Arlington County in 2005, Katie wrapped up a journalism degree from beachfront Pepperdine University and honed her writing skills at The Aspen Times and Los Angeles Sports & Fitness magazine. When she’s not researching a project that puts her behind the wheel or holding a leash, Katie is behind a desk as a writer and editor in support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. She lives in Arlington with her husband, Mike Githens, and her dog and frequent travel companion, Denali.
