About the Author

Wayne Bernhardson

Wayne Bernhardson first traveled to Chile in 1979, during the Pinochet dictatorship, wrote his M.A. thesis on llama and alpaca herding in the Norte Grande's Parque Nacional Lauca, and has returned repeatedly to broaden and deepen his knowledge and appreciation of the country.

Wayne overqualified himself for guidebook writing by earning a Ph.D. in Geography at the University of California Berkeley, before forsaking academia for a life on the road that many university faculty envy. He is also the author of Moon Handbook Guatemala. Wayne has written for publications including Trips, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the American Geographical Society's Focus, and often gives slide lectures on destinations he covers in his books.

When not in South America, Wayne lives in Oakland, California, with his wife María Laura Massolo; his daughter Clio Bernhardson-Massolo; and their Alaskan Malamute, Malbec (named for Argentina's signature red wine). Wayne can be reached through his website, www.southernconetravel.com, or through his blog, southernconeguidebooks.blogspot.com.
