Parasols and Petticoats in Port Townsend
One of the first hamlets to spring up from the rugged Olympic Peninsula in the 19th century, Port Townsend takes a lot of pride in the landmark Victorian homes that still stand testament to the town's extended lineage. The gingerbread trims, cupolas and gables are always a prime attraction at this tourist-friendly town settled at the northwestern point between the snow-heaped Olympics and the spot where the glistening Strait of Juan de Fuca meets the Puget Sound.
If you're a sucker for all things Victorian, then a trip to see the old dames of Port Townsend may be in order during the first weekend of May when the town hosts a good-old-fashioned Victorian Ball that's sure to draw in its share of petticoats and parasols to the party. A bit of a consolation prize for the cancellation of the town's annual Victorian Festival, the ball is sure to draw a lot of energy from Port Townsend's healthy cadre of Victorian enthusiasts. Featuring a musical septet, the ball will kick off with dancing lessons that will give you all the necessary moves to at least attempt a credible Lancer's Quadrille, Waltz, Schottische and Polka.
Check out the details at the website for the Northwest Chapter of The Victorian Society in America. Tickets are only $25 if bought in advance.
