Hood Canal Bridge Closure
As the kids get out of school and plans to hit the Olympic Peninsula heat up, don’t forget that the Hood Canal Bridge will be out of commission through mid-June. Washington Department of Transportation (WADOT) doesn’t have a specific reopen date just yet, but be sure to check out the alternative transportation page in the meantime.
Your best options to the other side of the canal are to either :
Drive around Hood Canal
Take the Port Townsend-Edmonds ferry
Take the temporary fare-free water shuttle
Once the bridge reopens later in the month it’ll still only be operating at partial capacity as construction continues through the end of the year. The end result will be a safer bridge with wider shoulders and an ability to better handle the growing traffic that has sprung up as Kitsap Peninsula has urbanized over the past decade.
Initially opened in 1961, the Hood Canal Bridge is the third-longest floating bridge and the longest over tidewater, clocking in at just over 6,471 feet. For more details about the construction project, check out WADOT’s blog about the process.
