Apocalypse NOT! Maya 2012 is Reason to Travel, not End of the World

Maya_for_show-1013.jpg

Let's get this straight: in exactly two months, NOTHING will happen. At least, nothing catastrophic to humanity or the world -- nothing that is not already happening, anyway. Also, there will be certainly be celebrations, ceremonies, and special travel deals before, during, and after the big December 21, 2012, "doomsday" date -- and I still highly recommend a trip to the Maya region, in 2012 and beyond. more >>

2012 Deadly Awakening: Fantastic story set in Mérida and Chichen Itza on December 21, 2012

I met writer Beryl Gorbman over a taco lunch in the Chichen Itza Salon in the conference center in Mérida, Mexico, and I admit, I was skeptical when she handed me a copy of her mystery novel, 2012 Deadly Awakening (Intelligent Life, 2010). I’d just completed a self-guided crash course on Maya studies, plowing through a pile of non-fiction books regarding 2012 and Maya time-keeping; most were most fairly fascinating, but some were fairly dry and dense. There are hundreds of such titles out there, but before Gorbman came along, I had never seen a fictional treatment of the subject. more >>

Underwater city revealed in new film, Mayan Blue

The trailer for Mayan Blue, a documentary film shot in Guatemala, definitely makes me want to see more. I'm also looking forward to chatting with the director, Rafael Garcia, about traveling in the Maya world. The film's facebook page is filled with enticing production stills and beautiful travel shots from around the country.

From the film's description: "Beneath the waters of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, archaeologists have discovered a lost city that has lain dormant for 2000 years. The secrets that this city holds may provide scientists with a physical connection between the myths of the ancient Maya and actual events in their historical past."

Colorado Awaits 2012 Winter Solstice Celebration

Maya2012_boulder.png

Don't have enough money for a plane ticket to the Mundo Maya this December? Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala will all be in full ceremony/celebration mode as we approach the December 21, 2012, famed end of the Long Count. Luckily, the winter solstice event will be celebrated outside the Maya region as well.

In Boulder, Colorado, for example, a number of high-energy tribal/fusion musical groups have teamed up to throw the "Mayan Millennial Masquerade Ball" at the Avalon Ballroom. Find out more and buy tickest at: www.coloradosolstice.com. The musical acts include Kan'nal, Tierro, Lunar Fire, and Buddha Bomb, to name a few.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE PLANNING A MAYA 2012 RELATED EVENT IN YOUR AREA AND I'LL SHARE IT WITH MY READERS! Just link to your event in the comments below. more >>
