Sunrise in Tikal: Pure Travel Winning

tikal.png

On my first morning in Tikal National Park, in northern Guatemala, where a 2,000-year-old Maya city sprawled beneath the vast Petén wilderness, I blinked wide awake an hour before my pre-dawn alarm, anticipatory endorphins surged through hungry traveler’s veins. This was not just another day of traveling. This was Tikal. Before sunrise. It was a legendary place-time combo. I just prayed it was not overcast as it had been the previous day. I wanted that sunrise. A few photos from that morning-> more >>

2012 Calendar with Maya and Gregorian Dates

2012MayanCalendar_coverpage.jpg

For the Mayaphile and/or traveler in your life, this 2012 Maya calendar is a perfect gift. It was developed by archaeologist Ed Barnhart and all proceeds from the $13 item go to support the Maya Exploration Center (MEC), a non-profit research and education center. Dr. Barnhart makes sure that in addition to our standard Gregorian days and months, each date block of this calendar includes the Maya hieroglyphic "calendar round" date, including both the sacred Tzolk'in and solar Haab cycles.

On the cover, is the archeological site of Palenque, one of the most alluring and incredible sites in Mexico and the Mundo Maya. The Maya Long Count (the only cycle that leads us to 2012 as a significant year) appears at the top of each month with a countdown to the 13th Bak'tun on December 21. more >>

They raved about this sprawling city of a million (four hours west of Cancun) as a practical travel base -- colonial color inside the city limits and converted 500-year-old haciendas in the countryside. more >>

Second Reference to 12.21.2012 discovered in Mexico? Probably not, say scientists.

As always, when it comes to anything having to do with Maya 2012, your first assumption should always be "don't believe the hype." That seems to be true with the new story by Associated Press today, "Mexico acknowledges 2nd Mayan reference to 2012." Until now, the only known direct reference to December 21, 2012 is a 1300-year-old inscription on Tortuguero Monument 6, found near Tabasco, Mexico. Headlines today are announcing a possible second reference to 2012 on an artifact known as the "Comalcalco Brick," the sketch of which is pictured above. more >>
