Tia Stephanie Tours Covers Culture, Cuisine of Southern Mexico and More

tia.jpg

There are a number ways to explore the Mundo Maya countries and regions. You can travel independently, stay at an all-inclusive resort with day-trip offerings, OR you can sign up for a tour. Pre-arranged trips free you of the hassle of booking, planning, and renting, and often add a layer of expertise and learning, especially if you get a knowledgeable guide who speaks well.

For interesting, educational tours of southern Mexico, Tia Stephanie Tours offers an extensive menu.

Tour themes include subjects like Culture and Cuisine, Art History, Textile Traditions, Ancient Civilizations, and Present-Day Cultures, especially as they "help travelers understand the complexity and diversity of the Mesoamerican civilizations, and that this was not just Maya and Aztec, but also Zapotec, Mixtec, Toltec, Totonac, Purepecha and many other ethnic groups and civilizations." more >>

Travel Opportunities in Yucatan, Mexico: Maya Research Program and Yaxunah

I'm always on the lookout for immersive volunteer and study opportunities south of the border and there are a plethora in southern Mexico.

"ASK ME ABOUT VOLUNTEERING IN A MAYA VILLAGE!"

That's what it says at the bottom of my first email from Grace Lloyd Bascopé, Ph.D., Director of the Mexico part of the
Maya Research Program, a fantastic multi-approach non-profit organization. So I do.

The Maya Research Program, she tells me, has an active volunteer program which works mostly in Yaxunah, a Yucatec Maya community about 20 minutes south of Piste and Chichén Itzá. more >>

2012, The Beginning, Film Trailer

Screen shot 2012-02-26 at 2.54.58 PM.png

What I like about the trailer for 2012, The Beginning is that it includes various Maya and Central American voices in addition to the normal line-up of knowledgeable Western researchers and archaeologists. Is there something special about the year 2012? Is it a time of change?

The film features interviews with John Major Jenkins, a preeminent voice on the subject, who makes a special visit to Tortuguero Monument 6. This famous cracked slab of stone bears the only known mention of December 21, 2012 in the ancient Maya text; it resides in a museum in Villahermosa, Mexico.

From the description: "In this feature documentary, we travel the world - from Honduras to Germany, the US to Guatemala, and across the ruins of Mexico - to explore what the sacred Mayan texts really say. Is this the end of the world or a new beginning?"

They had me at "travel the world." [LINK] more >>
