On Nature Lovers, Classic Hiking Gear, and Our National Parks

Last night I caught part of Ken Burns' gorgeous new documentary, The National Parks: America's Best Idea, on public television. If you haven't heard, it's a six (six!) part, twelve-hour series that charts the history of US national parks, from the dreams of a few nature-loving people to the park system as we know it today. more >>

Oktoberfest 2009

It’s officially Fall here in the U.S. and that means it’s time to party German-style. Traditionally, Oktoberfest is a sixteen-day celebration held each year in Munich, Germany during late-September up to (and including) the first Sunday in October. But sometimes it’s just not possible to get away to Munich.

If you’re craving brats, beer, and a steady oompah beat, here’s a run down of a few upcoming U.S. Oktoberfest celebrations from coast-to-coast. more >>

National Public Lands Day

September 26, 2009 is National Public Lands Day and thousands of volunteers from coast-to-coast will work to enhance and improve the public lands that Americans enjoy. From planting trees and building trails, to removing trash and culling invasive species, there’s something for everyone who wants to join in.

Here are just a few Signature Sites, by state, that are organizing volunteers, or find a National Public Lands Day Signature Site near you and get involved! more >>

Deal of the Day: Zion National Park

Zion.jpg

Our friends at the Los Angeles Times Travel & Deal Blog posted an amazing bargain today to one of the breathtaking national parks that Moon knows well—Zion National Park.

From Oct. 28th thru Nov. 24th, Zion Lodge—which is located inside the park—is offering a special “Zion-Tennial” rate of $100 a night for one of their motel rooms. Typical room rates start at approximately $159.

If you’ve never been, fall is the perfect time to visit the park. Summertime has come and gone, temperatures are cooler, and visitors are fewer.

Anyone interested in learning more about this deal can visit the LA Times blog or the Zion Lodge website. more >>
