I’ve posted about some of my favorite fall activities before, but other than a brief jack o’ lantern reference, I neglected to address that greatest of fall holidays—Halloween!

Aside from tried and true trick or treating, the weeks leading up to Halloween offer lots of not-so-scary, family-friendly events. Here are some of the best family-friendly Halloween events across the country:

Worlds of Fun’s Halloween Haunt

Family-friendly ghouls and goblins haunt Kansas City’s Worlds of Fun amusement park on weekends during October.

SeaWorld’s Halloween Spooktacular

SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Diego also change things up on October weekends. Kids can visit the parks in costume and practice their trick or treat skills before the big night. Events are included with general admission, though the schedule varies by park. Visit the SeaWorld Spooktacular website for event details.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Not to be outdone, the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World hosts this not-so-scary party with Halloween-themed fireworks, lighting, and parades. Kids are encouraged to dress up, trick or treat, and mingle with their favorite Disney characters, also in costume. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is only on select dates and requires the purchase of an event ticket ($47.95–59.95, depending on the date) in addition to regular park admission. Not all the Halloween Disney fun is in Orlando: Mickey’s Halloween Party at Disneyland Park features costumed characters, music, fireworks, and holiday-themed attractions like Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy and Haunted Mansion Holiday. Six Flags Fright Fest

Six Flags theme parks across the country also gear up for Halloween. The parks cater to young children with afternoon programming featuring musical shows, spooky rides, trick or treating, and Looney Tunes characters. After dark, Fright Fest targets the teen crowd (although some parks maintain scare-free zones for the wee ones at night). Fright Fest is included with general park admission, but some parks do charge an additional fee for the haunted houses. Check out the Six Flags website for park-specific information.
