A rare snowfall blankets Volcan Tajumulco's summit

Guatemala is home to Central America's highest mountains. Once in a while, when conditions are right, it can and will snow on the summits of the country's highest volcanic peaks. This was precisely the case last Saturday, when a group of climbers ascending Volcan Tajumulco (Central America's highest peak) were surprised by a sudden snowstorm. The event made national headlines, with photos appearing in today's Prensa Libre newspaper. Also included was a link to a youtube video (in Spanish).

Guatemala has been under the influence of a cold front from the north, a side-effect of the system which dumped inches of snow on the U.S. northeast last weekend. The rest of Guatemala saw rainy, cloudy and windy conditions all weekend, though it only gets cold enough to snow at higher elevations. Volcan Tajumulco, I should mention, stands at 13,845 feet.
