Guatemalans help out Haiti in time of need
Guatemala deployed a search-and-rescue team composed of 51 specialists to Port-au-Prince this morning. Rescue teams are in a race against the clock to find and rescue victims of Haiti's devastating magnitude-7 earthquake, which rocked the Haitian capital on Tuesday.
Among the missing are about 150 UN staffers (part of an international peacekeeping mission), including Hedi Annabi, the head of the MINUSTAH peacekeeping mission in Haiti. His Guatemalan predecessor, Edmond Mulet, was summoned from Guatemala City as acting head of MINUSTAH.
Food donations to Guatemala's disaster relief entity, Conred, can be delivered to its headquarters located at Avenida Hincapié 21-72, Zona 13 in Guatemala City. Donations will go directly to victims of the Haitian quake. Among the requested food items are canned goods, rice, beans and dehydrated soups.
