Who defines Cuban "terrorism"?

five.jpg

Every few years the entire nation of Cuba is mobilized against what they consider a grand injustice perpetrated by the United States. The Helms-Burton Law. The cause of Elián González. And, most recently, the imprisonment of the "Cuban Five."

The faces of these five Cuban men have for the past few years been ubiquitous throughout Cuba, from billboards and daily news items to T-shirts and every website, while massive demonstrations for their cause continue to be held nationwide. Every hotel in the country (even foreign-managed hotels) feature posters of the five in the lobby.

Accused by the U.S. government of "espionage," the five Cubans–Fernando González, René González, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernández, and Ramón Labañino–were convicted in U.S. federal court on June 8, 2001, and sentenced to from 15 years to life terms. more >>

Costa Rica adds a commuter train to link San José and Heredia

train.jpg

After several years of speculation and anticipation, a commuter train finally began service last week, connecting San José and the nearby city of Heredia. Operated by TUASA (Transportes Unidos Alajuelenses), which also operates local bus service, the route is served by four Spanish-made, air-conditioned two-carriage deisel-powered trains along its 10-kilometer route between San José's Terminal Pacífico and the Terminal Heredia.

The trains will make two stops along the route, at Santa Rosa de Santo Domingo, and Cuatro Reinas and Cinco Esquinas, in Tibás.

A total of 42 trips a day are scheduled. more >>

Reason for ouster of Cuba's top politicos revealed

Capitolio.jpg

When Cuba's Vice President Carlos Lage and Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez Roques were suddenly ousted on March 03, 2009, speculation ran rife as to why. No official explanation has been given. Still, it became obvious that the two had violated some unknown taboo when the Cuban press published their letters of contrition.

Last week, word leaked and the missing jigsaw pieces have fallen into place.

In mid-April, high-ranking members of the government, Ministry of the Interior, and Revolutionary Armed Forces were summoned to view top-secret videos that showed Lage and Roquez making disparaging remarks about Fidel and Raúl Castro and First Vice-President José Ramón Machado Ventura.

The two even joke about Fidel's infirmities and question Raúl's ability to govern the country. more >>

Don't get the wrong ferry in Costa Rica

Travelers driving to the Nicoya Peninsula need to do a little planning to figure out the best way across the Gulf of Nicoya.

The only north-south highway in Nicoya is Highway 21, which runs down the eastern ("inland") flank of the peninsula. Spur roads snake west over the mountains, connecting beach communities to civilization. Excepting a short section south of Sámara, no paved highway links the various beach resorts, which are connected by a network of dirt roads roughly paralleling the coast; at times you will need to head inland to connect with another access road. more >>
