Bicycle tours in Cuba hit top gear

In recent months I’ve consulted with several U.S.-based tour companies that wish to offer group bicycle tours of Cuba. To do so requires a special license for “people-to-people educational exchange” from OFAC (the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control), which oversees travel to and financial transactions with Cuba.

So far, OFAC has proven unwilling to contemplate bicycle travel as a viable means of cultural interaction, and to that end has denied applications that focus on cycling.

Nonetheless, you frequently come across U.S. citizens cycling in Cuba, alongside scores of Europeans doing the same.

More noticeably, this past year I’ve witnessed an explosion of cycling groups touring the island.

Costa Rica’s indigenous Boruca people make magnificent masks

When I first began researching my Moon Costa Rica Handbook two decades ago, I don’t ever recall having seen Boruca masks.

Today, these distinctive cultural icons are ubiquitous throughout Costa Rica, where they’re sold in virtually any souvenir store worth its salt.

One of the best I’ve ever seen is displayed proudly in my living room. Not a “mask” in the true sense, it is a three-dimensional carving hewn from balsa, in Boruca tradition, showing toucans, a jaguar, macaws, and other creatures against a forest backdrop painted in hallucinogenic detail. more >>

Cuba’s “horse whisperer” promotes Monty Roberts’ equine techniques

My friend Julio Muñoz has always had a passion for horses. He also has a knowledge of communicating with horses that is perhaps unique in Cuba.

This thanks to his enthusiasm for the techniques of Monty Roberts, the impresario who has revolutionized horse-training methods with his best-selling Man Who Listens to Horses and documentaries on PBS and the BBC.

Thanks to the books and videos brought by foreign guests staying at Casa Muñoz, Julio’s and his wife Rosa’s 18th-century home and room rental (casa particular), Julio was able to learn Roberts’ techniques. more >>

Ziplining in Costa Rica is a natural high

Costa Rica virtually invented ziplining, which started out being known as “canopy tours” before that term came to classify a broader range of activities relating to the forest canopy, from treetop boardwalks to rappelling.

Costa Rica’s entrepreneurs have always been quick to copy a success story. And the opening of the first zipline, in the cloud forest of Monteverde, in 1995 by the company now called the Original Canopy Tour, spawned dozens of copycat entities.

Costa Rica now has at least five dozen zipline systems. And the nation’s expertise is so renowned that Costa Rican zipline builders have been hired to erect systems in nations around the world, including Cuba. more >>
